Legendary actor Albert Finney died yesterday, of an unknown cause.

British actor Albert Finney, known for starring in movies like Tom Jones and Skyfall, has died, his family said.

Finney "passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side", his family said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Our thoughts are with Finney's family and friends at this hard time.

Finney has been nominated for a total of five Oscars and has won two BAFTAs - having also won the the BAFTA Fellowship in 2001. His other four Academy Awards followed later for Murder on the Orient Express, The Dresser, Under the Volcano and Erin Brockovich.

More recently, the actor starred in the James Bond film Skyfall and the Bourne films.

Albert was born in Salford in 1936 and his acting career began when he secured a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he established himself as a theatre actor.

It is unknown as yet what led to Finney's death; however, in 2011, he revealed he was receiving treatment for kidney cancer.

From there, it would be almost 20 years since Finney was up for the industry's top acting prize.

To millions of people, however, Finney will always be Daddy Warbucks - having played the beloved bald billionaire in the 1982 film adaptation of the hit musical Annie.

His career took him from British dramas such as "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning", a snapshot of working class life released in 1960, to a string of Hollywood hits. For film fans, his most memorable roles are no doubt in the Cohen Brothers' Miller's Crossing, the Oscar-winning Erin Brockovich, and Tim Burton's father/son tall-tale yarn, Big Fish.

He was married three times, to actors Jane Wenham and Anouk Aimeé between 1957-61 and 1970-78 respectively, and travel agent Pene Delmage in 2006.
