  • Earth’s long-term warming trend can be seen in this visualization of NASA’s global temperature record which shows how the planet’s temperatures are changing over time compared to a baseline average from 1951 to 1980. The record is shown as a runni

The annual analysis released by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found average temperatures across land and sea surfaces 1.42 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average, putting 2018 fourth, behind 2016, 2015 and 2017.

Global temperatures in 2018 were 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit (0.83 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, according to scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in NY.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for urgent climate action and increased ambition ahead of his climate summit in September, after the United Nations World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) released data showing the past four years were officially the 'four warmest on record.

"The key message is that the planet is warming, " said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

The specialists explain that the temperature of 2018 in Europe was the highest recorded in the analyses of both institutions, with 1.78 Celsius degrees above the average. Well, we haven't seen that on Earth since about 3 million years ago in the Pliocene.

In Phoenix, 2018 was the seventh-warmest year on record, according to the National Weather Service.

NASA and NOAA climate scientists said even though 2018 was a tad cooler than the three previous years that was mostly due to random weather variations.

The UK Met Office is going a step further, to look at the next five years, and they're confident that we're right in the middle of the hottest decade ever on record. One of the report's analysts says the impact is already being felt, and various regions are suffering from intense precipitation and other climate anomalies.

The polar vortex event last month that saw record lows across the American Midwestern states, leading to several deaths, is a result of a weakening of the jet stream and the kind of weather event that scientists fear will become more frequent as the temperature in the Arctic continues to rise.

Despite worldwide efforts, planet-warming emissions are trending upward.

The 20 warmest years in history all occurred within the last 22 years.

The British Met Office, which also contributes data to the WMO, said temperatures could rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial times, for instance if a natural El Nino weather event adds a burst of heat. The higher average temperature and record concentrations of Carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere have massive consequences.

However, the warming trend is most pronounced in arctic areas, leading to ice loss and sea level rise.
