  • Senate panel votes to advance nomination of William Barr, Trump's pick to be the next attorney general

A Senate panel voted on party lines Thursday to advance President Donald Trump's attorney general nominee William Barr, setting up a confirmation vote next week that will underscore the deep partisan divide over the nomination, particularly concerning how Barr would oversee the special counsel investigation.

Chuck Schumer, the senior Democrat in the Senate, said he would oppose Barr's confirmation in the final vote.

Barr, who previously served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993, would succeed Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was pushed out by Trump a year ago over the president's anger that he had recused from the Russian Federation investigation.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear if acting Attorney-General, Matt Whitaker, will appear before the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives, where he is expected to face questions on the Mueller probe, among other topics.

Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), the committee's chair, said that Barr had to be talked into returning to the Justice Department and that he trusted him to be "fair to the public and true to the law".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the Judiciary Committee's highest-ranking Democrat, said Thursday she felt the document was "disqualifying" for Barr.

Bahrain this week issued a statement defending its decision to pursue al-Araibi after he allegedly fled while awaiting trial. The club was accused of being "tone deaf" and "failing to read the room".

Barr has said he would allow Mueller to complete the investigation but has not confirmed that he would release the report of the investigation in its entirety. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, called a memo in which Barr was critical of Mueller's probe "disqualifying", saying she's anxious that he has not committed to releasing Mueller's report to Congress. Those regulations require only that the report explains the decisions to pursue or to decline prosecutions, which could be as simple as a bullet point list or as voluminous as a report running hundreds of pages.

Full Senate to vote on Trump attorney general...

The nominee was attorney-general once before, under president George HW Bush. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said Thursday.

"This is not the time to install an attorney general who has repeatedly espoused a view of unfettered executive power", Sen.

Barr broke with Trump in saying, "I don't believe Mr. Mueller would be involved in a witch hunt", a term Trump frequently used to decry the probe.
