The Duke of Edinburgh, 97, voluntarily gave up his credentials on Saturday, February 9, Buckingham Palace said.

The UK's Prince Philip, 97, has chose to "voluntarily surrender" his driving licence following a crash last month, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.

Philip was criticized after he was pictured driving on a public road without a seat belt just 48 hours after the crash, while Fairweather had earlier told the Mirror that she had not heard from the Duke in the days immediately following the incident.

Buckingham Palace said Philip - formally known as the Duke of Edinburgh - took the decision on his own after rolling over his Land Rover last month.

However, one woman in the Kia suffered a broken wrist and the other sustained cuts to her knee.

"We review each file carefully before a decision is made and will take this development into account, a spokesperson told The Telegraph, in reference to the license surrender".

The crash sparked a debate as to whether Prince Philip should still be driving at his age, with some calling for tougher driving tests before they can get behind the wheel.

Prince Philip has voluntarily surrendered his driving licence, less than a month he was involved in a vehicle crash and was seen driving without a seat belt in two days.

Philip came under days of media criticism for failing to quickly and publicly apologize for causing the crash. Police said they offered him "suitable words of advice" after that.

Dymond also called Philip a "fiercely independent" person who "would have resisted any suggestion that he be denied the right to drive himself".
