  • Spotify takes aim at ad blockers - GSMArena.com news

New rules in Spotify's updated Terms of Service policy state that those who use ad blockers could see their accounts immediately terminated or suspended. Those that do push those boundaries will be met with an "immediate termination or suspension" of their Spotify account. But for some apparently nearly the entire catalogue of music in the world for free isn't enough and they need to block ads - essentially killing any profit for the Spotify team and most importantly the artists and labels. The company, which turned a profit for the first time in 13 years, is about to swat freeloaders who use ad blockers as it experiences continued growth.

That's not to say that Spotify doesn't have measures in place to detect abnormal activity, it does, but this change makes it known to all users that Spotify won't tolerate ad-blockers being used. In March 2018, when it was reported that around 2 million users - or about 2 percent of the entire Spotify Free user pool - were using ad blockers to skip ads, Spotify took action.

In its updated Terms of Service, Spotify indicates it won't be so lenient with these users going forward.

Spotify sent out an email to its users notifying changes to its Terms of Service. In other Spotify news, the company announced the recent acquisition of two podcast startups, which include Gimlet Media and Anchor, where it will focus on gathering all of the audio content its consumers listen to in the streaming service. Users were also warned through emails and given the chance to reactivate the account after uninstalling the ad-blocking software. It seems that Spotify wants users to subscribe to their $9.99 a month plan if they don't want ads.
