Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) pressed Whitaker about Mueller's probe. Whitaker agreed to testify at the hearing where Democrats' questioning largely focused on his oversight of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

"I don't know if your time's been restored or not", he said. "But, to answer your questions, I have not talked to the president about the special counsel's investigation".

"I have not talked to the president of the United States about the special counsel's investigation", Whitaker told a U.S. He added that no matter how many times he's asked, he's already said "all I plan on saying" about the number of times he was briefed on the investigation. He suggested that the hearing was a waste of time because Whitaker likely only has a few more days on the job.

In response to recusal questions from Democrats, Mr Whitaker has repeated: "It was my decision to make".

Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the committee's top Republican, criticized the hearing as "pure political theater" and a "dog and pony show".

Trump's nominee for attorney general, William Barr, is expected to face a Senate confirmation vote next week.

Whitaker had threatened not to show up to the hearing after Democrats approved a subpoena if he didn't answer all their questions, but the committee chairman dropped the threat Thursday night.

Whitaker, frequently smirking, later made a similar comment to another Democrat on the committee, Sheila Jackson Lee, prompting a fierce admonishment.

He asked Whitaker about the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrest of Roger Stone, the political operative who has longtime ties to Trump.

Raskin delved into Whitaker's activities prior to being appointed to his current temporary position by President Trump, who fired former Attorney General Jeff Sessions after the 2018 midterms. They confronted Whitaker on his past criticism of special counsel Robert Mueller's work and his refusal to recuse himself from overseeing it, attacked him over his prior business dealings and sneeringly challenged his credentials as the country's chief law enforcement officer.

"Mr. Attorney General, we're not joking here and your humor is not acceptable", Jackson Lee told Whitaker.

"I'm proud of my passion, Mr. Whitaker", she tweeted.

Whitaker then was allowed time to explain how his ascension to be acting attorney general came about.

Whitaker testified he had never spoken with members of Trump's inner circle about his views on the probe as a private citizen before he joined the Justice Department.

Trump insists there was "no collusion" between his campaign and Russian Federation.

The spiteful Democrats of the House Judiciary Committee weren't looking for the TRUTH or any answers; they were all trying to lure Matt Whitaker into a perjury trap to harm him and President Trump.

Republican Representative Debbie Lesko of Arizona called the entire hearing "nothing but character assassination and harassment of our witness". "Just another way to undermine President Trump".

According to CNN, former Trump associate Roger Stone was "one of the last key campaign associates" to be investigated.
