  • England World Cup-winner Gordon Banks has died aged 81

The news was announced in a statement from the Banks family on his former club Stoke City's official website.

Gordon Banks OBE, who had been diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015, passed away overnight with his family at his bedside following a deterioration in his health in recent weeks. "We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him".

Banks' England career also began during that period, his senior debut coming in 1963 against Scotland at Wembley.

"I hit my toes as soon as I saw Jarzinho bearing down our left flank", he recalled.

But Banks managed to scoop the low ball over the crossbar with his right hand.

"From the moment I headed it, I was sure it had gone in", he said.

"Like a salmon leaping up a waterfall, he threw himself to tip the ball over the crossbar", Pele was quoted as saying.

The England team Twitter account on Tuesday posted a video of what is often called the "save of the century".

'An all-time great for England, I was privileged enough to be in his company on a number of occasions'.

He is perhaps best known for his wonder save from Pele during the 1970 World Cup against Brazil.

Posting on Twitter, Sheffield footballer Harry Maguire, said: "A World Cup victor, a legend".

Banks won 73 caps for England between 1963 and 1972 and made almost 200 appearances for Stoke before his playing career was brought to an end due to a vehicle crash that cost him the sight in one eye.

It was certainly not all plain sailing from there - Banks conceded 122 goals over 1954-55 with Chesterfield's reserves - but he was part of the Spireites side that reached the 1956 FA Youth Cup final.

One fan added: "RIP to an English football legend. Even though I was on the pitch I still don't know how he saved that header from Pele".

And after making his first-team debut for the Third Division club in November 1958, a move to the top flight came quickly, with Leicester signing him at the end of that season.

In eight years at Leicester, he was runner-up in two FA Cup finals and won the League Cup in 1964, before joining Stoke in 1967.
