Jurors in a federal court in Brooklyn have delivered a guilty verdict on all 10 charges in a high point of the 11-week long trial, with several of the carrying a life sentence.

The notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been found guilty on all counts in an global drug distribution trial in NY.

The worldwide notoriety of Guzman was boosted by two escapes from Mexican custody, one in 2001 and another one in 2015 - through a 1.5km underground tunnel large enough to ride a motorcycle.

In this courtroom drawing, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, centre, sits at the defence table while listening to the judge addressing the jury during his long-running drug trafficking trial in NY.

Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, more commonly known by the nickname "El Chapo", once considered the most powerful and feared drug trafficker in the entire world, was found guilty on all counts related to leading Mexico's Sinaloa cartel on Tuesday. Cogan says it made him "very proud to be an American".

Evidence showed drugs poured into the US through secret tunnels or hidden in tanker trucks, concealed in the undercarriage of passenger cars and packed in rail cars passing through legitimate points of entry.

Even when Guzman was recaptured in 2016 before his extradition to the U.S., he was plotting another escape, prosecutor Andrea Goldbarg said in closing arguments. Guzman's lawyers did not deny his crimes as much as argue he was a fall guy for government witnesses who were more evil than he was. Among them were Guzman's former Sinaloa lieutenants, a computer encryption expert and a Colombian cocaine supplier who underwent extreme plastic surgery to disguise his appearance.

In one of the trial's final days, Guzman told the judge he would not testify in his own defense.

The U.S. Justice Department said in 2017 it sought forfeiture of more than $14 billion in drug proceeds and illicit profits from Guzman.

Federal court marshals whisked Guzman out of the courtroom immediately after the judge read the guilty verdict.

The trial also featured extensive testimony about corruption in Mexico, most of it involving bribes to law enforcement, military and local government officials so the cartel could carry out its day-to-day drug shipping operations undisturbed. He took off running.

The drug boss escaped from prison twice - once in 2001 by hiding in a laundry bin, and again in 2014 when he escaped through tunnels on a specially adapted small motorcycle.

In 2015, he pulled off another jail break, escaping a maximum-security prison through a 10-metre deep tunnel. "In front of you".
