The European Tour remains in Australia this week for the third renewal of the ISPS Handa World Super 6 in Perth and the PGA Tour moves some 300 odd miles south along the California coast to Los Angeles for the Genesis Open at the magnificent Riviera Country Club.

Mickelson tied Mark O'Meara's record with his fifth victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach, the first one also a Monday finish in 1998 because of bad weather, with one big difference - that Monday finish was more than six months later in August.

Mickelson had a three-shot lead over Paul Casey with two holes to play when it was too dark too finish Sunday night because of delays from rain and a hail storm.

Casey finished with a birdie that was worth US$152,000 (NZ$225,000) because he wound up alone in second place. On Monday, with his 44th title securely in his pocket, he was more mellow.

"I've written down a goal of winning L.A. and I had an outside chance of winning this one - I had a very good chance of winning this one", Casey said. "He really protected both of us". I was very appreciative of that.

On Sunday, though, he was clearly irritated.

Casey has never won in three previous times he had a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour, all of them by two shots or more, and he was holding his own against the relentless pursuit of Mickelson, who missed three straight birdie putts from the 12-foot range by the slimmest margins.

Refugee footballer freed after Bahrain drops extradition
The pity is, the past two months of detention and fears he would be tortured on return to Bahrain could have all been avoided. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had in recent weeks has spoken out strongly on behalf of al-Araibi's freedom.

"And so it's gratifying to see the results and to finish it off the way I did".

Countered Casey: "It's not over yet". Just as he and Casey were about to tee off for the start of their round on Sunday, severe weather hit the Monterey Peninsula, covering Pebble Beach in hailstones.

We'll get to some nuggets backing each argument, but let's first hear from the guy whose opinion matters most in all things Mickelson - the ubiquitous lefty himself.

But Casey told GolfChannel.com that he "genuinely" couldn't see.

For years, Mickelson, 48, has rebuffed talk of his age, choosing to focus on aspects that encouraged him going forward even through a four-year stretch without a victory. "But I wanted to try to finish tonight because I'm playing well". "But I totally get where he's coming from".

Mickelson needs to win the US Open to complete the Major Grand Slam and with Father Time accelerating along, playing this year at a venue that he knows so well and that he plays so well, offers him a chance.

His brilliant play still shared the stage with weather that was freakish even by Pebble standards.
