The U.S.is the global leader in AI technology right now, but other countries are catching up fast.

While there was no specific funding announced for the initiative, an administration official did reveal that it called for improved reporting and tracking of funds spent on AI research and development.

"We can not sit idly by and presume that our leadership is guaranteed", according to a statement released by White House on Monday.

US President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order that would have federal agencies dedicate more resources and investment into artificial intelligence (AI) research, training and promotion. The administration says it's up to Congress to appropriate money.

This technology-promoting initiative calls for protecting the advantage of the United States in AI "against strategic competitors and foreign adversaries", but without specifying its competitors or adversaries.

Britain is due to leave the European Union on March 29, but Parliament has rejected May's divorce deal. The UK faces job losses in a "brutal" no-deal scenario come March 29, Theresa May has been warned .

The plan, called the American AI Initiative, is meant to enhance national and economic security and improve Americans' quality of life.

The order directs federal agencies to make government data and computing resources more available to artificial intelligence experts while maintaining security and confidentiality.

Instead, the White House hopes to provide leadership for private industry to take the initiative in developing artificial intelligence. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will implement standards that support trustworthy AI systems. The official also sought to allay concerns that investments in new AI technology may displace American workers, noting that the administration is "very cognizant of" the issue and has already developed programming like apprenticeships and career special education programs to address it.

The order will instruct federal agencies to focus on artificial intelligence in their research and development efforts, senior administration officials said, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
