When Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United were drawn together in the Champions League round of 16 back in mid-December, the Parisians were the overwhelming favorites.

Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe scored in the second half as PSG outclassed United 2-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Manchester United boss Solskjaer saw his side lose for the first time since replacing Jose Mourinho against a brilliant PSG at Old Trafford.

But although PSG have regularly failed in the knockout rounds of the competition, Mbappe urged Thomas Tuchel's side - who were without Edinson Cavani and Neymar due to injury - to be courageous. However, the Norwegian was left frustrated after watching Kimpembe score the first from Angel Di Maria's corner after being fortunate to escape a second yellow card before the half time.

"So, we have the opportunity to reach the next round, but we have to repeat what we've done today because this team [Man Utd] have a history in this competition as we haven't".

The final scoreline could have been a lot worse had David de Gea not made important interventions - and it would be optimism gone mad to suggest the second leg in Paris will be anything other than a completion of the formalities.

"The second goal was quality by them".

Maurizio Sarri: Chelsea boss says sorry after Man City rout
We are conceding a lot of goals and we can not accept that", said the Chelsea defender. "I don't know", he said. Something is changing, we were better at away than we were home and now we are better at home.

"You can't lay down and say this is over".

'First half there wasn't much in it.

"It is good, we are happy", he said after the match before adding that "it is only half-time, though". The Reds have obviously taken giant strides forward under Solskjaer and it is time to regroup.

But having come off the bench to score the victor in the 93rd minute of the 1999 final against Bayern Munich, Solskjaer is the man who epitomised more than most the "never say die" attitude of many Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United teams. "The players are disappointed but I also think they know we need to step up our level to get to the level we want to get to".

"It was an experience that can go either way, it's not going to be a season defining one, it's one we have to learn from".

Aside from victories in north London against Arsenal and Tottenham, facing PSG was United's biggest test since beating Italian champion Juventus at Turin in November in the group stage. A repeat of that 3-0 win in Paris next month would take United through to the quarterfinals.
