Within the hour, Newsom had responded, tweeting that the President's post was "fake news".

"Fake news", Newsom wrote on Twitter. "We need to move ahead into the 21st", another added. This is [California's] money, allocated by Congress for this project.

"As we've said previously, we support strong and effective privacy legislation in the USA that gives people the right to control their information and holds companies to high standards in explaining what data they have and how they use it", a spokesman said in an email. Newsom at his State of the State Address on Tuesday put the brakes on the $77 billion high speed project, an endeavor that voters authorized at the ballot box in 2008 with a plan to connect Los Angeles to San Francisco. The decision to derail the most ambitious parts of the line contrasts with proposals from Congressional Democrats in Washington to boost taxpayer funding on a sweeping package of climate-change measures unveiled by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that would boost funding for high-speed rail across the U.S.
