McConnell announced during a news conference Tuesday that the vote would "give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal".

The Washington Post's Robert Costa tweeted Tuesday morning: "McConnell is considering taking up the green new deal for a vote in the Senate as a way to rattle Sen Dems, per a McConnell aide here at the [Capitol]".

Markey told E&E News, "We haven't had a debate on climate change in 10 years, so I think it's very important for us to have as large a debate about the issue as we can. I mean, clearly "The Turtle" is trying to kill this, and they understand it", Limbaugh added, using his nickname to describe McConnell.

The proposals known as the Green New Deal were crafted in conjunction with Senator Ed Markey of MA. The legislation, co-sponsored by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has received much backlash since its roll-out.

The climate measure is already supported by at least five senators seeking the Democratic nomination for president: Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

Broadly speaking, Democrats do support action on climate change - two-thirds say it "should be a top priority for Trump and Congress this year" - but the question is whether they will support the Green New Deal as they learn more about it.

The proposal includes progressive agenda items like universal healthcare and a federal jobs guarantee.

The earlier version of the fact sheet described measures far beyond those contained in the actual plan, such as "Build out high-speed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary". Trump said at the rally. Republicans see the proposal as a big liability for Democrats, portraying it as a socialist plot to ban airplanes and cows. The move is often used as a political tactic, which would force several Democratic 2020 presidential candidates to go on the record either for or against the radical proposal that has a massive scope and cost. In July 2017, Republicans forced a vote on a single-payer health care system.

According to a GOP strategist that spoke with Axios, Republicans will emphasize the Green New Deal among "middle, lower classes and poverty stricken areas of America", broad constituencies crucial to either party's 2020 hopes. But Democrats didn't take the bait and voted "present" instead. "Unfortunately for Mitch, all he's going to do is show just how out of touch Republican politicians are with the American people". "The Green New Deal resolution has struck a powerful chord in this country, and Republicans, climate deniers, and the fossil fuel industry are going to end up on the wrong side of history", he said.
