The US agency responsible for military cyber operations cut off internet connectivity at the Internet Research Agency in Russian Federation on the day of the 2018 midterm elections, according to a report in The Washington Post on Tuesday.

Citing unnamed security officials, the newspaper reported that U.S. Cyber Command cut off Internet access to the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency on Election Day in November 2018 and for a few days afterward.

Individuals familiar with the issue told The Washington Post that "they basically took the IRA offline" for a day or so.

Russian trolls were awfully quiet during the 2018 Midterms. "They shut 'em down".

"NBC News has now confirmed that President Trump personally signed off on this offensive cyber operation against a Russian troll farm", NBC News national security reporter Ken Dilanian wrote later on Twitter.

Officials say the objective of the election day operation was to block any possible disinformation campaigns from Russian Federation regarding the Midterm results.

The group is a Kremlin-backed outfit whose employees had posed as Americans and spread disinformation online in an attempt to also influence the 2016 election, according to USA officials.

Dmitry Peskov, Mr. Putin's spokesman, cast doubt on The Post's report Wednesday, Rusian media reported.

The Internet Research Agency was one of three entities and 13 Russian individuals indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office in February 2018 in an alleged criminal and espionage conspiracy to tamper with in the US presidential race in a bid to boost Trump and disadvantage his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

"In general I can say that USA territory is constantly being used to organize a huge number of cyber attacks against various Russian organizations", he continued.
