Justin Trudeau 'tried to block SNC-Lavalin corruption trial'

But at the justice committee hearing on Wednesday, members of Trudeau's Liberal party appeared as unified; there have been no high-profile shows of public support for Wilson-Raybould within the party since Wednesday.

Scheer said the Mounties need to open a criminal investigation into what the Liberal government did to help SNC-Lavalin, which faces criminal charges related to allegedly corrupt dealings in Libya.

Wilson-Raybould alleged that she experienced a "consistent and sustained effort" by Liberal officials close to Trudeau seeking to interfere politically with her pursuit of a criminal case against SNC-Lavalin, according to CBC. "The prime minister again cited the potential loss of jobs and SNC moving", while also stressing that he represents an electoral district in Quebec.

"My staff, appropriately, would make her staff aware of the economic consequences of decisions, about the important of thinking about jobs", Morneau said Thursday. "I would strongly advise against it". Wilson-Raybould declined to override the judgment of her top legal team. She says Trudeau and others repeatedly brought up the risks to the company if it were convicted and that a provincial election in Quebec was a major concern for the federal Liberals.

Wilson-Raybould resigned in January, along with Trudeau's longtime ally and principal secretary Gerry Butts, who has been vague about his reasons for leaving the government.

"I want to be absolutely clear here". And was it because of empathy for workers that Trudeau wanted to save SNC-Lavalin, Martineau asked? "No".

I may not have faith in parties or politics, but I do have faith in the power of the individual, and in our nations, and that is because of people like Jody Wilson-Raybould; who despite the criticism, controversy, and the injustices, has empowered thousands of people, including Indigenous youth, with her integrity and commitment to truth.

October 9 - The prosecution service confirms in writing it will not invite SNC-Lavalin to negotiate a remediation agreement, a decision the company challenges in Federal Court.

On Thursday, at an announcement for the Canada Space Agency, Trudeau reiterated that he had done nothing wrong, and was simply doing everything he could to preserve the economy. "We've also done it in a way that has respected our laws, and respected the independence of the judiciary - of that there actually is no doubt". Mr Trudeau said the police had not contacted anyone in his office.

Speaking at an event south of Montreal, Trudeau said he was satisfied to have this looked into by the Ethics Commissioner's Office.

"As we said before, we are constantly looking at - [and] our priority is - maintaining and looking after shareholder value".

SNC-Lavalin and its supporters say it would be unfair to penalise the company as a whole and its thousands of employees for the wrongdoings of former executives.

"I think we have two matters here". I don't know what kind of pressure he put.

In the meantime, the Port Moody-Coquitlam MP said he is circulating an NDP-backed petition calling for a public inquiry into the SNC-Lavalin affair "so that people can let the government know that this is the right thing to do", Donnelly said.

Moreover, Wilson-Raybould said they were anxious the company might decide to move its operations out of Quebec, affecting last fall's provincial election in Quebec and potentially hurting more Liberals in the province, including Trudeau, in the federal election this fall.

"It is troubling because I very deeply believe in our institutions". It was appropriate to take that into consideration, while respecting the rule of law, he said.

"Everybody seems to understand that politicians don't phone judges, but I would strenuously suggest the same is true of politicians phoning prosecutors", he says. "And then let the public be apprised of what the results are", said Donnelly.
