The biggest unanswered questions in Captain Marvel

The answer, I think is in the film's star, Brie Larson, as hot-shot fighter pilot and kick ass warrior Carol Danvers". For as long as it took to reach the screen the film underwhelms some in its drama and action, but there's still a clear vitality in its hero making her necessary in more ways than one.

Well, now she's given feminists everywhere a spectacular new pin-up, as a jet-heeled superhero with fists that can thump practically any man into the middle of next week.

Captain Marvel was released this weekend starring Brie Larson, Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Lashana Lynch Gemma Chan, and Annette Bening. In the movie-the first of three in the moneymaking behemoth known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be released this year-the assessment is based on no real evidence, which also generally the case in real life.

It must be said that light-speed seems an odd MacGuffin for a cinematic universe where characters are forever hopping from one star system to another, but whatever. The big catch for her is that she has no idea who she is, having completely lost her memory in unknown circumstances.

More importantly, though, Jackson's joke is a good reminder that as."fun" as it can be to obsessively pore over interviews hunting for details about a movie that's not come out yet, it's even more fun to actually go see the movie and figure things out for yourself, which you can do when Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8, ya nerds.

On the other hand, writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (whose last collaboration was 2015's wonderful but little-seen road movie Mississippi Grind) keep it all bombing along very watchably, handle a series of narrative twists cleverly and make the most of the Nineties setting with some smart visual gags about CD-roms and all the things we thought back then were the very essence of cutting-edge.
