The company's Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule blasted off on schedule at 2:49 a.m. Saturday. Instead of an actual human, the Crew Dragon carried a lifelike anthropomorphic test "device" lovingly called Ripley that had sensors to help determine the potential effects of the trip on actual humans.

According to NPR, astronauts aboard the ISS were able to board the Crew Dragon around 7:07 AM time in Houston, where NASA staff were watching the event, and later returned without oxygen masks to properly inspect the craft.

Just a day after launching to orbit, SpaceX's new Crew Dragon capsule has arrived at the International Space Station. The missions launch from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center from where other historical NASA missions have launched in the past.

"Thank you on behalf of SpaceX", CEO Elon Musk tweeted in reply.

Behnken said he was "super excited" by the Dragon successfully docking at the ISS.

Although the contact appeared slow, the ISS and the capsule were moving at more than 27,000km/h in orbit around the Earth.

SpaceX, along with Boeing, was awarded a contract to fly United States astronauts to the space station by NASA back in 2014.

Nasa chief Jim Bridenstine said it was a new era where "we are looking forward to be being one customer, as an agency and as a country".

The Demo-1 mission marks the first flight of the new and improved Dragon 2 spacecraft, which is longer and more massive than its Dragon 1 predecessor.

The next stage in Demo-1 is for it to autonomously dock with the International Space Station (ISS), where it will remain for 5 days.

MARTIN: Bridenstine says the entire mission so far has been a success, from the launch to the docking at the International Space Station.

After the shuttle programme ended in July 2011 following a 30-year run, NASA began outsourcing the logistics of its space missions.

NASA hopes the Crew Dragon, and a Boeing-built capsule called Starliner, will start flying U.S. astronauts later this year and end the United States' years-long reliance on Russian Federation to ferry crew to and from the International Space Station.

While working to unload some of the cargo beneath the seats inside the Crew Dragon, Saint-Jacques gave the "zero-g indicator" a bump that sent it tumbling around the inside of the spacecraft. "Just one more milestone that gets us ready for our flight coming up here". The Crew Dragon was designed with an emergency escape system that can carry people out to safety if something goes wrong.

Eleven minutes into the flight, the Dragon is let go and must make its own way to the station.
