A Chicago grand jury indicted Jussie Smollett, the "Empire" actor, on 16 counts for allegedly lying to police about what he described to be a hate crime attack, according to reports on March. 8.

Smollett was originally charged with filing a false police report after the January 29 incident when he claimed two masked men attacked him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs.

The actor was originally charged with one felony count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office on February 20, according to the outlet.

A Cook County grand jury returned a more thorough indictment on Saturday. He said two men physically attacked him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs, threw a chemical liquid on him and looped a rope around his neck.

If Smollett is found guilty, falsifying a police report is a Class 4 felony which carries a potential sentence of up to three years in prison.

Police say he staged the attack because he was "dissatisfied" with his salary.

Prosecutors said Smollett staged the attack because he was unhappy with the studio's response to the threatening letter.

Canada's Trudeau admits 'erosion of trust' in SNC-Lavalin case
He chalked up the controversy to an "erosion of trust" between Wilson-Raybould and Butts that he should have caught earlier. At that point, she said, the prime minister 'jumped in, ' reminding her that he was the MP for Papineau.

The trouble is not yet over for "Empire" star Jussie Smollett, despite being out on bond on a single count of filing a false police report with the Chicago Police Department.

Police say Smollett recruited two men to stage the attack because he was upset with his pay on the Fox show.

He also claimed the men said "this is Maga country" during the assault, a reference to President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again".

The Jewish actor apparently "took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career", according to Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. While Smollet has maintained that he is telling the truth, authorities are clearly stepping up their pressure on him, and ultimately he could be sent to prison.

Smollett has consistently denied any involvement in orchestrating the attack against himself. They cause harm to legitimate victims who are in need of support by police and by investigators as well as the citizens in the city. The decision was made to 'avoid further disruption on set, ' producers said.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the Chicago Police opened an internal investigation into Smollet's case.
