The plane, with a crew of eight and 149 passengers, was headed to Nairobi, Kenya, when it crashed at 8:44 a.m. local time.

The aircraft, with 157 people on board, including eight crew members, was flying from Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

According to an AFP report, the airline said "search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties".

In a statement, Boeing said that was "deeply saddened" by the Ethiopian Airlines tragedy.

Canada's foreign minister on Sunday deplored the "terrible news" that 18 Canadian nationals were among the 157 people killed in the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jetliner.

The same model - a more fuel-efficient version of the 737 - crashed in late October in Indonesia during a flight operated by Lion Air, leaving 189 people dead, also just moments after takeoff.

The aerospace giant tweeted addressed the Ethiopian Airlines accident on Twitter.

Canada's two largest airlines say they are confident in the safety of the Boeing 737 aircraft after a fatal crash on Sunday involving an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

Ethiopian Airlines said it would send staff to the accident scene to "do everything possible to assist the emergency services".

The airline said the doomed flight was piloted by a senior captain, Yared Getachew, who had more than 8,000 cumulative flight hours and a "commendable" performance record.

The plane showed unstable vertical speed after takeoff, air traffic monitor Flightradar 24 said in a Twitter post.
