  • Building collapses in Lagos, school kids trapped, many feared dead

Tragedy struck, some minutes ago, at Itafaji, Lagos Island, as a three-storey building housing a school collapsed, with pupils feared killed and over 100 trapped. A crowd erupted into cheers as another child was pulled from the wreckage.

Reuters reported that so far only seven children had been rescued from the rubble, according to local residents, and that the school may have had as many 100 pupils inside. Witnesses said almost a dozen students had been pulled from the ruins, but it was not yet clear if any were dead. Onlookers crowded around the area in the densely populated neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital.

It was learnt that the structure collapsed around 10:00am while class was on. A single yellow excavator scooped at the ruins, a nest of rebar and dust. Some were barefoot. One held a water bottle in his teeth.

"It is believed that many people including children are now trapped in the building", said Ibrahmi Farinloye, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency's southwest region, adding that casualty figures were not yet available.

Building collapses are common in Nigeria, where new construction often goes up without regulatory oversight.

Poor infrastructure has led to mass casualties in Nigeria before. Many of those inside the church were visiting from South Africa.
