Others facing charges are the former women's soccer coach at Yale, the senior associate athletic director at the University of Southern California, the women's volleyball coach at Wake Forest University, and the sailing coach at Stanford.

In all, 50 people were charged: 33 parents who paid to give their children undeserved entry into high-end college life; 13 university sports coaches and test organisation operators; and Singer and three others who operated the fraudulent scheme.

In an interview with the website, she said she chose to go to college despite her fame because of her parents.

Huffman reportedly paid $15,000 to have her eldest daughter's SAT answers doctored post-exam. In a conversation last June with a cooperating witness, he was told his daughter needed to "be stupid" when a psychologist evaluated her for learning disabilities that would entitle her to more time to take the test, according to court papers. The couple allegedly agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 to have their daughters designated as recruits for the USC crew team, even though they did not participate in crew.

Whether Felicity Huffman was speaking from a place of sincerity and full-disclosure or harboring guilt for her recent actions is up for debate; however, either way, it does suggest that her involvement in the cheating scandal should come as no surprise.

"Dozens of individuals involved in a nationwide conspiracy that facilitated cheating on college entrance exams and the admission of students to elite universities as purported athletic recruits were arrested by federal agents in multiple states and charged in documents unsealed on March 12, 2019, in federal court in Boston", a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in MA announced about the indictments.

Macy has not been charged in the case, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Schleifer told the court he was a "subject of the investigation".

In most cases, the students did not know their admission to the schools was contingent on a bribe.

Their 19-year-old daughter, Olivia Jade Giannulli, is a celebrity in her own right.

In one instance highlighted by federal prosecutors, it is alleged that the head women's soccer coach at Yale was paid $400,000 to accept a student even though the applicant did not play soccer.

The scam is said to have been discovered after authorities found a California businessman who ran an operation helping students get into the college of their choice. Authorities have not said why he wasn't charged.

Actress Lori Loughlin arrives at the People's Choice Awards 2017 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, January 18, 2017. "Ms. Heinel received more than $1.3 million in bribes and Mr. Vavic about $250,000 according to federal prosecutors".

Messages seeking comment from Huffman's representative were not immediately returned.

If a student can't get into a university through entrance requirements, there are often backdoor ways from rich parents.

Sklarow, the independent education consultant unconnected to the case, said the scandal "certainly speaks to the fact that the admissions process is broken". "I am voting that once she gets accepted, she maybe takes a year off", he said.
