A late-winter blizzard slammed U.S. Rocky Mountain and Plains states on Wednesday, unleashing a "bomb cyclone" of high winds and drifting snow that stranded motorists, canceled more than 1,300 airline flights and was blamed for the death of a Colorado state trooper.

According to the National Ocean Service, bombogenesis occurs when a "midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies, dropping at least 24 millibars [a measure of atmospheric pressure] over 24 hours".

The Twin Cities branch of the National Weather Service posted a video that shows the storm as it swept the Great Plains. The National Weather Service warned of heavy rains, severe thunderstorms, flooding, heavy snows, blizzard conditions, and heavy winds across the central USA over the next two days. Amid the expected severe weather, more than 1,200 flights within, into or out of the USA were canceled as of Wednesday morning, according to the website FlightAware.

The storm was expected to drop up to 22 inches (56 centimeters) of snow in Wyoming, 14 inches (36 centimeters) in South Dakota and a foot (31 centimeters) in Colorado.

A large swath of the US was under a variety of warnings, advisories, and warnings. Blizzard conditions were expected from northeastern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming, western Nebraska and parts of North Dakota and South Dakota, the weather service said.
