On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported the United States had warned Germany about future "information sharing" if it uses "untrusted vendors" in its 5G infrastructure. Huawei and other Chinese companies have been under fire from the Trump administration following several accusations including allegations of been used by the Chinese government for espionage.
According tothe Wall Street Journal, US Ambassador Richard A. Grenell sent a letter to the German economy minister, which said that Berlin should discriminate against Chinese companies like Huawei when selecting providers of 5G equipment to upgrade its networks.
The same official also raised the issue of a recent lawsuit filed by Huawei against the U.S. government, alleging that a ban was unconstitutional for targeting the firm without evidence.
Europe's security agencies relied heavily on United States intelligence to stop terrorist attacks, the Journal noted.
Up to now, Germany has rebuffed any USA attempts to sway it into barring Huawei from participating in the development of its next-generation networks, as Washington and some of its allies did earlier over the company's alleged ties to Chinese intelligence and suspected involvement in commercial espionage. Hence, the Chinese tech company is credible to bid for the country's 5G project.
