  • A shoe is seen among the debris as responders inspect the scene of the plane crash

Sunday's flight left Bole airport in Addis Ababa at 8:38 a.m. (0538 GMT), before losing contact with the control tower just a few minutes later at 8:44 a.m.

The cause of the crash of the new Boeing 737-8 MAX plane was not immediately known.

The Max mock-up is the newest version of Boeing's workhorse 737 models, the world's most popular commercial aircraft.

As the sun set, the airline's chief operating officer said the plane's flight data recorder had not yet been found.

"At this stage, we can not rule out anything", Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told reporters, "we can not also attribute the cause to anything because we will have to comply with the worldwide regulation to wait for the investigation".

Records show that the Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane that crashed was a new one.

"Ethiopian is Africa's biggest airline, and recently the airport in Addis Ababa overtook Dubai as the leading gateway to sub-Saharan Africa", Peralta reports.

The CEO has visited the crash site today.

The fleet will continue flying since the cause of the crash is not clear, the CEO said.

House Will Have to Vote on Impeachment, Despite Pelosi's Opposition
It's also odd to hear the argument that no inquiry should happen simply because the Senate probably would never convict. To be clear, I'm not saying that Pelosi should support impeachment hearings right now.

The plane was on a regularly scheduled flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi when it took a nose dive near Bishoftu, a town about 37 miles southeast of Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Airlines confirmed online that the aircraft registration was ET-AVJ, a four-month-old aircraft, which was delivered in November of previous year.

Kenya lost 32 people, more than any country.

The crash shattered more than two years of relative calm in Africa, where travel had always been chaotic.

"It is believed that there were 149 passengers and eight crew on board the flight but we are now confirming the details of the passenger manifest for the flight".

It said it would issue further notices after consulting with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing.

Ethiopian Airlines has also tweeted a series of emergency hotline numbers.

The last major accident involving an Ethiopian Airlines passenger plane was a Boeing 737-800 that exploded after taking off from Lebanon in 2010, killing 83 passengers and seven crew.

Nine British passengers are among the 157 people killed when a plane crashed in Ethiopia on Sunday.
