Many Instagram profiles refused to load, Facebook users were faced with empty newsfeeds, and issues sending messages through Facebook's Messenger app, as did WhatsApp users. As of Thursday morning, the only good news for Facebook is that plunging stock price appeared to have found a floor.

Their outage map for Facebook showed a surge in reports in the Northeast from Washington, D.C. through NY, though a cursory search of the Twitter free-for-all on the topic indicates the reach is well beyond the greater metropolitan areas.

Facebook estimates that 2.7 billion people use its apps, with more than 2 billion users posting and messaging on its services every day.

The blackout lasted more than 12 hours for some people, with users in North America and Europe being the most affected.

The outage also affected Facebook Workplace and reportedly affected its ads management service.

'We are still investigating the overall impact of this issue, including the possibility of refunds for advertisers, ' the spokesperson added.

With the New York Times reporting that Facebook is under criminal investigation for actions related to data sharing with third parties, Wednesday was always going to be a bad day for the social network.

A grand jury in NY has subpoenaed information from at least two major smartphone makers about such arrangements with Facebook, according to the Times.

In addition to looking at the data deals, the probes focus on disclosures that the company shared the user data of 87 million people with Cambridge Analytica, a British consulting firm that worked with US President Donald Trump's campaign.

'We've provided public testimony, answered questions and pledged that we will continue to do so, ' the spokesman said.

Regulators, and now prosecutors, appear intent on determining whether this was done in ways that let users know what was happening and protected privacy. The company has a large campus of data centers in Prineville.
