  • At least five killed after pedestrian bridge collapse in Mumbai

The collapse of a foot overbridge (FOB) outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Thursday was the second such incident in nine months in the city.

The deceased have been identified as Apoorva Prabhu (35), Ranjana Tambe (40) and Zahid Shiraj Khan (32).

The bridge connects CST station and has two landings - one outside Anjuman Islam school and the other at BT lane that heads towards the back of Azad Maidan police station and Cama hospital. Mr Fadnavis was speaking to reporters after visiting some of the injured at St Georges Hospital.

Fadnavis said the he has instructed the Mumbai police not to spare anyone responsible for the collapse of the foot overbridge.

The bridge, which was under fix according to multiple Indian media reports, gave way around 7.30 pm (1400 GMT) on Thursday as rush hour commuters made their way into Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

Surprisingly, as per the locals, the bridge was not in bad condition and still a part of the foot over bridge collapsed. Following the incident, traffic has been affected. Mumbai Police has also tweeted in this regard and has advised commuters to use alternate routes.

A team of the National Disaster Response Force has rushed to the accident site.

He offered condolences to the families of the victims and expressed hope that the administration will take swift action and provide urgent medical help to the injured.

An eyewitness said the over-bridge was being used by pedestrians even as fix works were ongoing. "The plan included changing the tiles of the bridge and new paint", said an official. While the Railway Ministry said the FOB was under Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Shiv Sena leader Anil Desai junked the claim.

The survey in question was initiated after a major bridge collapsed on the outskirts of Mumbai in 2016.

"A slab of the bridge had collapsed".

When contacted, the municipal commissioner and additional municipal commissioner were unavailable for comments. The bridge was constructed by BMC in 1988. While the government, which had ordered the survey of all bridges across the state, had directed the agencies to finish the work within three months, the exercise was delayed. This means it needed minor repairs only.
