The CEO reiterated that the company is organizing around a "privacy-focused" emphasis on private messaging, which he announced last week.

"While it is sad to lose such great people, this also creates opportunities for more great leaders who are energized about the path ahead to take on new and bigger roles", Zuckerberg said.

Facebook has seen plenty of internal rearranging over the past couple of years, as executives have left the company or moved around it into new roles.

Chris Cox, the chief product officer who was considered to be a close friend of Mr Zuckerberg, and Chris Daniels, the head of WhatsApp, are departing.

Cox, who dropped out of a Stanford University graduate degree program to work with Zuckerberg when the company had just 15 engineers, was widely seen as one of the most popular and capable executives at the social network - and a potential replacement CEO, were Zuckerberg to leave. "He believes deeply in providing end-to-end encryption to everyone in the world across our services", Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post, welcoming Will Cathcart as the new head of WhatsApp. Daniels worked for Facebook for eight years, and was promoted to oversee WhatsApp last May.

Cox was in charge of Facebook's apps including its flagship social media site, as well as Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.

Zuckerberg, in a separate post, said Cox had discussed the possibility of moving on "for a few years", but had remained for a transition period.

The departures of Cox and Daniels come a day after a technical issue that limited use of Facebook and Instagram for most of Wednesday.

Perhaps more than anyone else at Facebook - even more than COO Sheryl Sandberg - Cox was a sounding board for Zuckerberg on product ideas.

Facebook's family of apps strategy has so far been led jointly by Cox and Javier Olivan, vice president of growth. Zuckerberg wants to encrypt user content and make posts, messages, and photos ephemeral, much like Snapchat. Instead, Fidji Simo will be appointed as the new head of the Facebook app.

Forrester analyst Jessica Liu said it sounded like Cox was "subtly disagreeing" with Zuckerberg's privacy memo, based on Cox's farewell post.

With Daniels' departure, WhatsApp will be led by Will Cathcart, who most recently led the Facebook app.
