MPs to vote on May's Brexit deal with 'legally binding' changes

  • Finally, a Big Week for Brexit

After a chaotic day of changing plans in London, the prime minister made a last-minute decision to fly to Strasbourg, France, for late talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Following a last-minute dash to Strasbourg, the prime minister said she had secured the alterations to the withdrawal agreement demanded by MPs after they overwhelmingly rejected her deal in January.

Ms. May wasn't helped by Attorney-General Geoffrey Cox, who released a legal opinion of the revised deal on Tuesday that indicated the changes she negotiated had limited impact.

If white smoke emanates from Belfast, the next place to look was the eurosceptic wing of her own Conservative Party, where over 100 rebels reside.

Currency expert Stafford-Taylor added: "However, if parliament vote against May's deal there will be a fresh vote to consider tomorrow which could further influence to the pound's movement".

Theresa May's Brexit deal will be rejected by 363 MPs today, according to spread betting firm Sporting Index.

With just a little over two weeks until the deadline of March 29, May has stated that she will hold a vote Wednesday to determine whether or not the United Kingdom should pursue a no-deal Brexit if Parliament votes down the measure on Tuesday. One in three of May's Tories rebelled against her orders and voted down her deal in January.

"If you pushed me to the end point where it's a choice between no deal and no Brexit".

Lidington said two new documents would be put to MPs.

However, it was received with caution by British MPs unsure of the legal ramifications, leaving Britain's exit from the European Union (EU) still precariously poised ahead of the March 29 Brexit deadline.

But the Attorney General said the "legal risk remains unchanged" and the "fundamental circumstances remained the same".

But in the final part of his conclusion, Cox said that legal risks of Britain being stuck in the backstop remained.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the prime minister's negotiations had "failed" and the announcements did not contain "anything approaching the changes" she had promised Parliament.

Top EU officials warned that the defeat had increased the chances of a chaotic "no-deal" British exit, which could mean major disruption for businesses and people in the United Kingdom and numerous 27 remaining EU countries. The political influence of Conservative Brexiteers may be at something of a peak, having secured a significant concession from the EU. "It is hard to see what more we can do", the statement said, adding that the latest vote "significantly increased" the likelihood of a no-deal Brexit. May's political spokesman said she had not discussed resigning.

He said members of parliament are working on the assumption May's deal won't pass tonight.

Supporters of Brexit say that while the divorce might bring some short-term instability, in the longer term it will allow the United Kingdom to thrive and also enable deeper European Union integration without such a powerful reluctant member.
