President Trump used his veto power for the first time Friday to overturn a congressional resolution that would have blocked him from using defense funds to build the border wall with Mexico.

Twelve Republicans broke with Mr. Trump to vote for the resolution, which passed the Senate Thursday afternoon.

Indeed, Trump had telegraphed his plan to proceed with additional wall spending on Thursday, minutes after the Senate voted 59-41 to block it.

But the Senate margin fell short of the 67 votes needed for a veto override.

The sheriff can be seen Friday in a video tweeted by the president among a group of leaders gathered in the Oval Office as Trump strikes his pen, officially vetoing legislation attempting to strike down his declaration of a national emergency at the southern border. Declaring a national emergency allows Trump to steer an extra $3.6 billion to the wall.

"The President has chosen to continue to defy the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the American people", she said. And I have to, in particular, thank the Republican. senators that were on our side and on the side of border security and on the side of doing what they have to to keep our nation safe.

The vote came a day after the Senate called for an end to U.S. military support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, marking the second instance in two days that a Senate that has been mostly deferential to Trump took a position against him.

"It's not appropriate for a president to ask for money, Congress decides what to spend and then the president spends the amount he wants anyway under the National Emergencies Act", said GOP Senator Lamar Alexander shortly before voting to terminate the emergency declaration.

"We clearly have a [border] crisis and we have to address it", Republican Senator Rob Portman told reporters. "Think of that", he said.

Following the veto, the resolution will return to the House.

Trump made a border wall a central promise of his 2016 campaign for the White House. "This is not about the president or border security, in fact I support border security, I support a barrier". The official was not authorized to speak publicly on internal deliberations so spoke on condition of anonymity.

Trump falsely claimed that the U.S.is "on track to APPREHEND more than one million people coming across the Southern Border this year".

Trump initiated the showdown months ago when he all but dared Congress not to give him the $5.7 billion he was demanding to build the U.S. -Mexico wall, by threatening a federal government shutdown.
