James Gunn was sacked previous year in July by Disney after a few alt-right journalists made his old tweets public. According to the Verge, Gunn made tweets relating to pedophilia, transphobia and other offensive topics. A major USA outlet exclusively announced that Disney has reinstated him and the director just posted a confirmation. Horn was reportedly persuaded by Gunn's public apology and a series of meetings. As reported, Marvel has agreed to start the production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after Gunn finishes Suicide Squad.

Gunn was officially rehired by Disney Friday, ending the campaign for Gunn's return to the franchise after the Guardians mastermind was sacked in July over resurfaced tweets containing offensive subject matter, including pedophilic jokes. Post firing, Disney President Alan Horn met Gunn on a few occasions to discuss the whole matter.

The "Guardians" cast released an open letter later that month in full support of Gunn and the movie's star, Chris Pratt, personally said he'd "love to see him reinstated as director of Volume 3".

In July, Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, cut ties with Gunn after Pizzagate conspiracy theorists Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec drew attention to tasteless tweets the filmmaker posted between 2008 and 2011. Aside from the notable reversal of a swift decision, Gunn's rehire presents a conflict of superhero proportions - he's now in talks to write and direct a sequel of Suicide Squad, the DC Comics villain franchise. At the time, Gunn apologized and noted that he had apologized in the past. "As I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor", he said in a statement at the time. The first two films have made more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales. His firing sparked a public backlash and numerous franchise's stars, including Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista, circulated an open letter expressing their support of him and his reinstatement.
