Valve updates SteamLink app to let you stream anywhere

  • Valve extend Steam Link out of the home and networking API to all developers

For those making games, Valve have opened up the Steam Networking Sockets APIs to all developers. Most HEXUS regulars will already be aware of Steam Link (and the earlier hardware-only solution) which facilitates Steam gaming on the same local network as your Steam library packing PC.

The feature is now in beta and requires a few caveats, but it's still really exciting. As the name implies, Steam Link Anywhere expands the range of this feature to any Android or Raspberry Pi which is connected to the internet, anywhere. It will be an important year this time around as Valve tries to keep developers from handing exclusivity over to the Epic Games Store. Of course, people will need high upload speeds from their PCs and strong network connections to their Steam Link devices to take advantage, Valve said. To install it you go into the settings of the app and change the setting within the "Beta Participation" menu item to "Steam Beta Update". You can do this at the computer itself or you can use a remote desktop app to do it from wherever you might be.

Steam Now Lets You Stream Games From Anywhere

Steam Link Anywhere was announced ahead of Valve's GDC 2019 talk. However, my T-Mobile data connection at home wasn't fast enough to actually play anything, but I was able to get connected.

You'll need to be in the beta branch of Steam to get the update, but you can find instructions on how to enable that here. Valve explain the system here, and among the perks for developers are anonymized network traffic (protecting servers and clients from DDOS attacks) and potentially lower pings through Valve's networks. That's because Apple has already rejected Steams attempts to get the Steam Link app into the App Store, saying that it represents "business conflicts" presumably because Apple is anxious about people playing PC games rather than those from the App Store.
