  • I am innocent’ Huong in dock flanked by officers

Indonesian Siti Aisyah, left, and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, right, are escorted by police as they leave their court hearing at Shah Alam court house in Shah Alam, outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 2, 2017.

Prosecutors did not reveal why they rejected Huong's appeal but let Aisyah go free.

Vietnam's call had followed Monday's release, at Indonesia's request, of an Indonesian woman, who had been accused along with the Vietnamese, Doan Thi Huong.

She told reporters: "Only God knows that we did not commit the murder".

In one, a woman identified as Huong puts her hands on Kim's face, while a blurry image shows someone the prosecution identified as Siti Aisyah hurrying away.

The following day, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung met Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Zamruni Khalid to ask the Malaysian court to ensure the fair trial and release Huong, said Hang. "If she is convicted, she will always wonder if Siti Aisyah was equally culpable", Ramkarpal said.

Huong's lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik was more blunt, telling the court the decision was "perverse".

"The decision not to withdraw does not sit well with our criminal justice system".

Teh said, "Very obviously, there is discrimination".

"Both presented same defense before this court".

"It is our complaint that the public prosecutor has not acted fairly or justly", he said.

Kim Jong-nam murder trial: prosecutors reject request to free Doan Thi Huong
Kim Jong-Nam murder suspect loses bid for release

The court is scheduled to resume proceedings on Thursday. The global police organization Interpol has issued red notices asking governments around the world to send them back to face trial.

Kim Jong Nam was living in exile in Macau before the killing, having fled his homeland after his half-brother Kim Jong Un became North Korea's leader in 2011 following their father's death.

Kim Jong Nam was the eldest son in the current generation of North Korea's ruling family.

Hương, 30, is charged with killing a North Korean national whose passport name was Kim Chol by smearing his face with an illegal chemical poison at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13, 2017. There was security camera footage of Huong. The North Koreans then promptly left the country.

But Huong says she was duped by North Korean spies into approaching him, believing it was a harmless prank for a TV show.

Another lawyer for Huong urged Malaysia's attorney-general to explain why he dropped the case against Aisyah but not Huong.

The judge agreed to delay the trial until April 1, but warned there should not be any more delays after that.

"My message to the other woman workers, please don't easily trust the others".

"You can look at her, she was crying this morning, she was depressed, and she didn't sleep, perhaps did not eat well as well", he said.

On March 12, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh talked over the phone with Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah to discuss several issues, including the trial of Huong.

Those meetings would have been unthinkable back in 2017, when Kim Jong Nam's assassination was widely seen as evidence of his half-brother's brutal but calculating leadership style. He had been living overseas for years but could have been seen as a threat to Kim Jong Un's rule.
