  • Ambulance staff take a man from outside a mosque in central Christchurch New Zealand on Friday. Multiple people are in custody after shootings at two mosques there

New Zealand's stricken residents reached out to Muslims in their neighbourhoods and around the country on Saturday, with a fierce determination to show kindness to a community in pain as a 28-year-old white supremacist stood silently before a judge, accused in mass shootings at two mosques that left 49 people dead.

Yet many observers - including people of colour, and immigrant and religious minority communities in the West - needed no official designation of the barbaric event to recognise it as an act of terror.

On a bunch of pink lilies one family had written a card to "our Muslim brothers and sisters".

"I'm not privileged to a full breakdown at this point but it is clear that young children have been caught up in this horrific attack", she said regarding victims of the attack.

Funerals were planned on Saturday for some of the victims, several of whom were born overseas.

THE man charged with murdering 49 people in a terrorist attack at a New Zealand mosque has appeared in court.

National carrier Air New Zealand canceled at least 17 flights in and out of Christchurch, saying it couldn't properly screen customers and their baggage following the shootings. The gunman spends more than two minutes inside the mosque spraying terrified worshippers with bullets again and again, sometimes re-firing at people he has already cut down.

"I was really lucky", Nour Travis, who was on the scene at Al Noor told New Zealand radio station NewsTalk ZB.

"Her sister was shot on the footpath, on the driveway, and a little kid as well".

He told Stuff: "I got told by my best friend's father to him, that he leaped on somebody else to save their life. We never expected anything like this could happen", he told television station TVNZ.

The live-streamed massacre received a flurry of "likes" and positive comments from New Zealanders on the extremist website it was originally posted on.

The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said it was not aware of any threats locally but urged mosques and Muslim centers "to take increased security precautions".

She did not offer much detail, but said a ban on semi-automatic weapons would be looked at. I mean, you're killing people. "God bless you all".

"If this evil thinks we will stop going to our mosque here or stop doing our worship to our god, Allah, we never ever can not stop", Linwood mosque Imam Ibrahim Abdelhalim told reporters outside.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush said Friday night that a man had been charged with murder.

Twitter and Google, which owns YouTube, say they're working to remove any video of the shootings from their sites, as well.

In Peel Region, consisting of cities west of Toronto such as Mississauga, Ont., and Brampton, Ont., Chief Chris McCord said specialized equity and community mobilization units would be making the rounds of mosques and other places of worship. "There is a lot for them to be going through and our hearts are with them", Ms Dalziel said.
