An Australian senator had a raw egg cracked over his head and faces censure from his fellow lawmakers after sparking outrage by blaming Muslim immigration for the New Zealand mosque shootings.

Australia is grappling with the New Zealand shooter being its citizen, given how far-right groups have been active in Australia for decades.

Footage of the incident shows a young man watching Mr Anning from the sidelines before he starts filming with his mobile phone, and then smashes the egg on the back of the senator's head.

An online fundraiser for the Melbourne teenage boy who egged Senator Fraser Anning has soared into the five figures.

The 17-year-old was later released pending further investigation, according to the network.

"Police arrested a 17-year-old male from Hampton after he allegedly threw an egg at a 69-year-old Brisbane man at an address in Moorabbin this afternoon during a planned meeting", the statement said.

"Today's shootings in Christchurch highlight the growing fears within our community both in Australia and New Zealand over the increasing Muslim presence".

Anning came under scrutiny on Friday for making a comment on Twitter in response to the attacks in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, where at least 49 people were shot and killed.

Australia's prime minister, Scott Morrison, tweeted that Anning's remarks on immigration were "disgusting".

The statement received condemnation from Egyptian parliamentarians, including Member of Parliament Dr. Mohamed Fouad who released a statement in English condemning Senator Anning's "hateful remarks" and "despicable words".

Aussie Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also hit out at Anning's comments.

"While Muslims may be the victims today, usually they are the perpetrators", Anning said.

Through his act of smashing a raw egg onto the back of Anning's skull, the teenager instantly became an global hero.

"For somebody to use the privilege of Parliament, the privilege of this platform, to spew such hate is beyond comprehension", Anne Aly, the body's first female Muslim member, told the Times then.

A change.org petition calling for Anning's removal from Parliament has received over 450,000 signatures since Friday.

"What I said was that a terribly unfortunate thing, a tragedy, but it's going to be eventually accepted or expected that these sort of things happen".
