  • Christchurch mosque shooting: Handcuffed, barefoot, main suspect smirks in court; next hearing on April 5

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Sunday said that she received a "manifesto" from the terrorists who opened fire in two churches in Christchurch just nine minutes before the attack. Another victim died later in Christchurch hospital.

A total of 50 people were killed in Friday's New Zealand shooting by a self-described white supremacist, who live-streamed the terror attack on Facebook.

At least 49 people are confirmed dead, with more than 40 people injured following attacks on two mosques in Christchurch on Friday afternoon. Police have warned the public that sharing the video is an offence and social media companies have said they are trying to scrub it from their platforms.

"I will not be saying anything conclusive until we are absolutely convinced as to how many people were involved, but we hope to be able to give that advice over the next few days", he said.

Farid Ahmad, whose 44-year-old wife Husna was killed as she rushed back into a mosque to rescue him, refused to harbour hatred toward the gunman, Australian-born, self-avowed white nationalist, Brenton Tarrant.

Tarrant was remanded into custody and is expected to appear in court again on April 5.

There will likely be additional charges, reported CBC News, but the police have yet to release details of what they may be.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Mr Tarrant had a firearms licence and owned five guns.

The suspect is then said to have driven about 5km (three miles) to another mosque in the suburb of Linwood where the second shooting occurred. The pre-schooler was praying alongside her father Waseeim at the Al Noor mosque when she was shot at least three times.

"It is with sadness that I advise that number of people who died in this event has now risen to 50", Police Commissioner Mike Bush said.

Officials in New Zealand are now carrying out the hard task of identifying those who died.

Huge piles of flowers were laid at sites near the mosques and passersby of all faiths stopped to pay respects.

Haji-Daoud Nabi, 71, who ran the city's Afghan Association, is believed to have been killed when he threw himself in front of people in the mosque to protect them.

Ardern said 39 survivors remained hospitalized Saturday, with 11 critically wounded.

His son, 22-year-old Talha Naeem, was also killed by the shooter inside the mosque.

The tragic incident in two mosques was condemned throughout the world.

Ms Ardern burst into prominence during New Zealand's 2017 election, feted globally as part of a new wave of progressive, young leaders that included France's Emmanuel Macron and Canada's Justin Trudeau.

The cabinet will also hear from intelligence agencies about how a self-avowed fascist legally purchased and trained to use two semi-automatic weapons, reportedly AR-15s, two shotguns and a lever-action gun without drawing the attention of the authorities.

New Zealand has previously tried to change its gun laws, with the most recent attempt coming two years ago.
