Nearly 1,600 guests were secretly filmed in their hotel rooms across the nation, with the footage live-streamed online for paying customers to watch.

As detailed by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's cyber investigation unit, the minuscule cameras with 1-millimeter lenses were planted within TV media boxes and power sockets among many other spots around the bugged motel rooms.

Two men have been arrested and another pair investigated in connection with the scandal, which involved 42 rooms in 30 accommodations in 10 cities around the country.

In the past five years, cases of illegal filming in South Korea have skyrocketed by the thousands.

At least two people have been arrested, the Washington Post reports.

More than 800 South Korean couples were live streamed having sex in love motels, Seoul police said Thursday in one of the largest-scale and most intrusive examples yet of the country's spycam epidemic. The intended audience, however, was much larger than just those four - a website broadcast the videos to its over 4,000 members, at least some of whom paid for access.

The scandal has caused uproar in South Korea where women are increasingly speaking out against what they describe as a culture of misogyny and the rampant spread of intimate photos and videos taken by hidden cameras, which they say have women living in constant anxiety and distress.

Investigators believe the hotels did not take part in the scheme.

Police said there was no evidence the businesses knew about the breaches of privacy.

South Korea is no stranger to secret videotapings.

Tens of thousands of South Korean women took to the streets in protests against the practices, under the slogan "My Life is Not Your Porn" previous year.

In response, Seoul launched a special squad of women inspectors who have been conducting regular inspections of the city's 20,000 or so public toilets to search for spy cameras, though some critics have denounced the move as a superficial response to a societal issue.
