Now, the earliest possible landing on the moon by NASA isn't until 2028, Pence said.

Pence announced at National Space Council that the USA is now planning on returning American astronauts to the moon within the next 5 years.

"Today, I spoke at the National Space Council where we discussed the need to accelerate our return to the Moon". Since Apollo astronauts last walked on the moon in 1972, no country has made a serious attempt to send humans back to the lunar surface.

He said the United States became the first nation to reach the Moon in the 20th century, and would be the first nation to return astronauts to the Moon in the 21st century. "But the same was said back in 1962", Pence said.

The US has just announced that within the next 5 years NASA plans to return American astronauts to the moon surface.

"China and Russian Federation are aggressively developing and deploying capabilities - including anti-satellite weapons, airborne lasers, menacing "on-orbit" capabilities and evasive hypersonic missiles - that have transformed space into a warfighting domain", Pence wrote, linking to a February 2019 report by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency.

According to Pence, the National Space Council will recommend to NASA that it target the Moon's south pole region for its next crewed mission, as the region is known to contain large quantities of water ice and may be an ideal location for a permanent lunar base. Later he announced that NASA is creating a new Moon to Mars Mission Directorate to focus on formulation and execution of exploration development activities.

The United States believes the planes were carrying "cybersecurity personnel", a USA official told Reuters on Tuesday. Instead Maduro, who is deeply unpopular in Venezuela, retains power mainly through the loyalty of the military.

Pence recommended the use of commercial launch systems instead.

Pence, who chairs the council, also urged NASA to build new partnerships with America's private space companies and entrepreneurs, adding that "we're in a space race today, just as we were in the 1960s".

"NASA is going to do everything in its power to meet that deadline", Bridenstine said.

"As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, what better place to discuss the future of space exploration than to do it in the #RocketCity". After Tuesday's announcement, Bridenstine said he was sure NASA could achieve a successful SLS flight by next year.

In his speech, Pence criticized the "bureaucratic inertia" and "paralysis by analysis" that he said had resulted in the SLS delays, and called for a "new mindset" at the space agency. At the same time, Pence practiced sharp criticism at the United States space Agency Nasa, he was "accused of being bureaucratic, hard-to-maturity".

But Pence doesn't speak for the entire USA space program. Well, at least not since the last time we set foot on the moon. It also proposes terminating activities that the Administration knows are congressional priorities (two Earth science programs, the next space telescope, and STEM education programs).
