To celebrate the 15th birthday of Gmail, Google today announced several new features for Gmail. Gmail gained traction because it had Google search built in, but today is more of an artificial intelligence and machine learning productivity play.

Bank also revealed that the company is expanding its Smart Compose service, which helps users draft new emails without needing to type in repetitive words and phrases, to Android. That insight comes thanks to a 9to5Google report, which found that the forthcoming official scheduler would allow users to send a scheduled email as soon as two minutes into the future or to delay it to anytime under "50 years from now". You won't have to have the Gmail app open after scheduling the email for it to actually be sent, as that's all done on the backend. However, Google has made a decision to expand the service to more devices. iOS users will have to wait as the feature is being now rolled out only to Android devices.

Smart Compose is available on Android and iOS support will be coming soon. It will personalize suggestions for you, so if you prefer saying "Ahoy", or "Ello, mate" in your greetings, Smart Compose will suggest just that. In this version, for example, it might auto-suggest "Hey" as a salutation, if that's the way you usually write, and suggest subject lines, too. If you work in a team that's spread across multiple timezones, this feature is going to be a boon for you.

The last new feature pertains to those who use Google's other productivity tools, such as Calendar or Google Docs. If it's past midnight tomorrow, then the Inbox app will no longer give you the option to press "not now" and continue using the app.

The recent launch of Smart Compose-which suggests text for you-has "already saved people from typing over 1 billion characters each week-that's enough to fill the pages of 1,000 copies of "Lord of the Rings". If you're using the Gmail app, double check for any pending updates waiting to be installed.
