Threatener-in-chief: Trump keeps border closure idea alive - without committing

  • U.S. President Donald Trump arrives to speak at a campaign rally in Grand Rapids Michigan U.S

"Closing the border would not be a good thing", says Colbert, before citing the US Chamber of Commerce's remarks that closing the border would be an "unmitigated economic debacle". I think the president's right about that.

Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Kevin McAleenan said on March 27 that the border security system has reached its "breaking point," estimating the agency would conclude the month with some 90,000 caught trying to cross the border illegally-up more than 140 percent from 2018 and the most since 2008.

However, whether the choice to "close the border" would mean a complete halt of goods coming across from Mexico, avocados and all, is unknown.

From the avocados on avocado toast, to the limes and tequila in margaritas, the United States is heavily reliant on Mexican imports of fruit, vegetables and alcohol to meet consumer demand.

Trump's conduct would make the border less manageable, increase the flow of desperate people (some of whom perish on the way) and throw the economy into a tailspin.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen intends to fly to the border mid-week to assess the impact of several changes the administration has recently implemented, including efforts to return more asylum seekers to Mexico as they wait out their case.

Steve Barnard, CEO of Mission Produce, told Reuters that in the event of a shutdown, the United States would run out of the green fruit in around three weeks as Mexico is the dominant supplier at this time of year.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday told US lawmakers about the need to work on the ratification of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to boost the three countries' economic development.

NY to ban single-use plastic bags
The state's economic development efforts are the biggest beneficiary of the new budget, getting a 10 percent funding bump. Most single-use plastic bags provided by supermarkets and other stores will be banned statewide starting 1 March 2020.

One source detailed how the plans include an assessment of the potential financial damage of a border closure, which is being prepared by the Council of Economic Advisers.

In fact, a 2015 Pew study concluded that in a historic shift, more Mexicans returned to their home country between 2009-2014 than entered the United States. Migrant advocates and some Democrats in Congress oppose the proposed legislative changes, saying they would send vulnerable children back to unsafe situations in their home countries.

Detentions at the US border have surged in recent months, angering Trump and putting pressure on Lopez Obrador to find a solution that will prevent a shutdown of the frontier to the market for 80 percent of Mexico's exports.

Waltz said he believes there's a middle ground when it comes to addressing the issue at the southern border.

But honestly, can Trump actually shut down the border?

Then to top it all off, the White House gave 25 people top security clearances whom intelligence community personnel believed posed a risk.

The effects were evident Monday: Sergio Amaya, a 24-year-old American citizen who lives in Juarez, Mexico, and attends UTEP.

"If you start with this nonsense of closing the border, there's no longer an argument", he said.
