  • WhatsApp is now rolling out one very important privacy feature

For people who select "My Contacts", only contacts can add you to groups.

Groups are one of the best features of WhatsApp but they can also become a nightmare if they add you to groups without any control.

But today, after testing them for a while on iOS, WhatsApp is rolling out new privacy settings which should help control this.

WhatsApp has rolled out new privacy settings, which includes an invite system for groups. Of course, the option will remain to leave the setting unchanged and allow anyone to be able to add you to a group without having to give permission.

The WhatsApp users can enable the privacy setting by going to Account, Privacy and Group.

Now when users select the "Nobody" option, they have to approve joining every group to which you're invited and "My Contacts" means only users that they already have in their address book can add them to groups, the Facebook-owned company said in a statement. If you choose Nobody then you will be sent an invite via a private message when a person tries to add you to a group.

Brexit an opportunity for Irish unity debate, says Mary McAleese
There was still time for May to present an alternative proposal to break the impasse, Varadkar said. The Irish premier met with Macron ahead of talks with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel in Dublin.

With numerous incidents where the platform has been used to spread misinformation and rumours, this seems to be yet another attempt by WhatsApp to battle fake news. The instant messaging app is bringing an invite system for groups to essentially give users the choice of joining the group. There you will see three more options - "Everyone", "My contacts", and "Nobody".

Make sure you have the updated version of WhatsApp on your phone.

WhatsApp is giving users more control over groups.

The move is significant as social media platforms are expected to play a major role in political campaigns to reach out to citizens in large numbers. One of the biggest changes made a year ago was the limiting of forwarding a message in India to only five chats at once.

However, WhatsApp has so far resisted the government's demand for identifying message originators, arguing that such a move would undermine the end-to-end encryption and the private nature of the platform, creating potential for serious misuse.
