EU Official Says No-Deal Brexit Becoming More Likely

  • Theresa May calls in her cabinet to discuss what route if any can be found out of the Brexit deadlock

Her decision to seek another short delay to the current Brexit date of April 12 and turn instead for support from Labour, which wants to stay in a customs union with the EU, may make a "soft" Brexit more likely - one that keeps Britain's economy closely aligned to the world's biggest trading bloc.

The Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party, which props up May's minority government in Westminster, added: "It remains to be seen if sub-contracting out the future of Brexit to Jeremy Corbyn, someone whom the Conservatives have demonised for four years, will end happily".

Earlier, both European Commission chief negotiator Michel Barnier and French president Emmanuel Macron had talked up the likelihood of a "no deal" scenario, with Macron warning that the EU would not be "held hostage by the resolution of a political crisis in the UK".

This week May finally acknowledged her bind, and began seeking a compromise with her Labour opponents to try to win their backing for the withdrawal deal. He said May wanted Labour "to bail her out of a position she's dug herself in".

Many of his critics accuse him of being the "hand maiden" to a Tory Brexit by not taking a firmer pro-remain line.

A Labour spokesman said the two held "constructive exploratory discussions about how to break the Brexit deadlock".

Parliament has rejected the deal she negotiated with the bloc three times, with Corbyn's Labour consistently voting against it.

The EU should prepare for the implications of a no-deal Brexit on the future security partnership with the United Kingdom, the bloc's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, told the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee on Tuesday (2 April).

So far the House of Commons has failed to find a majority for any alternative plan.

"If there is no deal, there is no transition", he added.

If Britain can't break its Brexit impasse, it risks crashing out of the European Union in nine days.

A motion was approved in the European parliament on Wednesday by which procedures are set in motion for Gibraltar to be officially described as a "colony" of the UK.

May has always ruled that out, saying it would limit Britain's ability to forge an independent trade policy.

Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer led the Labour delegation, while Theresa May's deputy David Lidington headed up the Conservative team. They will be angry if the party actively helps bring about the U.K.'s departure.

European Union leaders have warned they will want clear answers from May in Brussels about what the new extension was for.

She is going to have talks with Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to see if, between them, they can work together and come up with a plan for what to do next. She wants to agree a policy with the Labour leader for MPs to vote on before 10 April - when the European Union will hold an emergency summit on Brexit. That meeting lasted for SEVEN HOURS - longer than a lot of school days!

Mark Pritchard, MP for The Wrekin, said none of the indicative votes which took place on Monday would deliver Brexit.
