  • 17-year-old Claire Campbell asked Democratic Beto O'Rourke to be her prom date on Thursday

As the senator of one of the two states who allow felons to vote from behind bars, Sanders responded in the affirmative to a question about whether felons serving their prison sentences should still have the right to vote.

The issue came up because Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, has been pushing a constitutional amendment that would restore the voting rights of felons after they have completed their sentence.

During a campaign rally in Sioux City, 17-year-old Claire Campbell asked O'Rourke: "It's OK if you say no, but will you go to prom with me?" At the time, he said that felons should "regain their constitutional rights after they have paid their debt to society". "That's bad", he said.

Mr Sanders has surpassed his rivals in early fundraising, earning $18.2m (€16.1m) in the first six weeks of the 2020 campaign, and has developed a sophisticated campaign team since his first run. "I believe in that, yes, I do".

However, in a setback for Democrats, the conservative candidate for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat captured 6,000 more votes than his liberal challenger in a race last week that Democrats had expected to win.

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday said he's not for "open borders", but "comprehensive immigration reform".

At a town hall meeting on Saturday, he was asked whether it should be a nationwide law.

But she stopped short of calling for imprisoned citizens to cast ballots in elections, adding, "While they're incarcerated, I think that's something we can have more conversation about".

Advisers argue Mr Sanders has addressed the weakness by working to build relationships with black leaders in SC and other Southern states, while making racial inequality and criminal justice more prominent issues in his campaigning.
