Why Netanyahu Will Likely Remain PM Despite Tied Result

  • Israelis head to polls as Prime Minister Netanyahu seeks fifth term

Israel's general election results nearly guarantee that long-serving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will return to the office Tuesday.

In winning a record fifth term Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scored a uniquely personal triumph.

Initial exit poll results by Israel's main TV stations showed the two parties far ahead of all of the other competitors in the race and indicated that Blue and White would emerge as the largest party. Faced with criticism over his alliance with an overtly racist entity, Netanyahu has defended the agreement as a way to improve his chances of forming a right-wing governing coalition led by his Likud Party. "I was very moved that the nation of Israel once again entrusted me for the fifth time, and with an even greater trust".

"The fact that [Netanyahu] won, I think we'll see some pretty good action in terms of peace [with the Palestinians]", said Trump.

In Israel's short 70-year history, no party has ever gotten a majority of the 120 seats in the Knesset.

"The biggest issue is Netanyahu himself: whether Israelis are exhausted of Netanyahu, whether they're put off by the stench of corruption that surrounds him, whether they want a change, or whether they prefer to stick with a safe pair of hands and a statesman that obviously enjoys good relations with many world leaders", Northeastern University Professor Dov Waxman told RT. "There's actually been very little debate - a striking lack of debate - over Israeli policies".

"Presently, Benjamin Netanyahu's party "Likud" also has 35 seats in the parliament, but its natural allies are "Shas" party with eight mandates", he said.

Bernie Sanders on Sunday said he's not for "open borders", but "comprehensive immigration reform". At a town hall meeting on Saturday, he was asked whether it should be a nationwide law.

"The common features of these parties are that, firstly, they are right-wing parties, I would even say the far-right-wing parties, which has been indicated even in their names", he said.

Commenting on the election, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said Israelis had voted to preserve the status quo.

"Ultimately the individuals in the region will sort this out", the secretary of state said. By morning, Gantz admitted that the odds were not in his favor, but issued a statement to supporters saying that the movement was only at the beginning of its journey.

World leaders reacted Wednesday to a likely electoral victory for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with fellow right-wing leaders hailing his triumph while others were more circumspect. He was deeply disturbed by Trump's supposed role in Netanyahu's re-election, citing recent policy decisions such as moving the USA embassy to Jerusalem, and declaring Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

U.S. officials have only revealed vague outlines of what the plan might propose, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has suggested it could break abruptly with precedent.

Khalil al-Hayya said Wednesday that "there is no difference" between the Israeli parties, and pledged that Gaza's militant Hamas rulers would continue seeking for Palestinians to "end the occupation and achieve our national goals".

Extending Israeli sovereignty on a large-scale in the West Bank could be the death knell to already fading hopes for a two-state solution with the Palestinians. Gantz, a career soldier who retired as chief of staff in 2015, entered politics past year for the first time, joining forces with two other former army chiefs. He faces possible indictment in three graft cases, and has denied wrongdoing in all of them.
