Woods sank a 37-foot birdie putt at the ninth, dropped in a 13-footer for birdie at 11, then lipped out a birdie chance at the par-3 12th after a storm delay.
McIlroy got his round under way with a flawless drive and an approach to 25 feet but left his birdie putt inches short and then strangely opted to hit a three wood off the tee on the par-five second. Day fired 67 after tweaking his back Thursday.
