Nepal plane hits parked helicopter while taking off, killing three

The pilot and three other crew members survived and are being treated at a hospital in Kathmandu after being airlifted there.

Three people have died, and four others have been left injured after a plane and helicopter crashed into each other near Mt Everest.

Tenzing-Hillary Airport is known as the gateway to Everest and is regarded the world's most unsafe because of its hard approach and short runway. Lukla is the starting point for those looking to trek to Mount Everest base camp. It is open only to helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft.

Locals said a Summit Air plane with call sign 9N-AMH collided with a helicopter of Manang Air, which was parked within the airport premise.

An airport official spoke to Straits Times, saying: "The plane slipped towards the helipad during take-off and collided with two helicopters".

In February, a helicopter flying in bad weather crashed into a mountain in northeastern Nepal, killing all seven people on board, including the country's tourism minister.
