Zach Johnson hits on the 18th hole on Thursday during the first round for the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.

But because Johnson had yet to tee off, the ball was not technically in play when he made his swing, meaning the ruling came down to his intent.

Only his pride was hurt, since he was able to re-tee without a penalty because he did not intend to move the ball.

The ball trickled to just two or three meters in front of him before coming to a halt.

Had that happened not on the tee box, Johnson would have incurred a penalty. "I actually hit a really good tee shot after that, so I think I recovered nicely". "That's a first", he said afterwards.

Speaking to Fox News at the show's Season 8 premiere , Cunningham admitted that he's "nervous" about how fans will react. I felt very safe, and I remember enjoying that day just because it was a different element for both of those characters.

The 13th tee is the quietest corner of Augusta National's course with no spectator close enough to see Johnson's mishap but it didn't go unnoticed by his playing partners Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter and millions of fans watching at home.

The 2007 Masters champ bounced back in the early going on his second round, moving to one-over par on several occasions.

But Johnson is adamant he will not the suffer the same misfortune on Saturday, as he said: "I don't think I could do it again if I even tried".

There is now a five-way tie for the lead, with Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Francesco Molinari, Jason Day and Brooks Koepka all on seven-under after 36 holes.
