  • Microsoft Says Hackers Had Access to Some

The same source also claimed that the hackers had access for "at least six months", although Microsoft disputed this and maintained that the culprits' access lasted between January 1st and March 28th.

In an email that was previously sent to users, Microsoft said a hacker managed to swipe a support agent's login credentials, potentially exposing email addresses, subject lines, and other information, but not the actual contents of any emails.

"Our data indicates that account-related information (but not the content of any e-mails) could have been viewed, but Microsoft has no indication why that information was viewed or how it may have been used", the company wrote in an email.

In the latest of a seemingly endless string of high-profile hacks, Microsoft confirmed to TechCrunch over the weekend that a "limited" number of people who use Microsoft's email platforms - including Outlook, MSN, and Hotmail - had their accounts compromised.

"We addressed this scheme, which affected a limited subset of consumer accounts, by disabling the compromised credentials and blocking the perpetrators' access", a Microsoft spokesperson said. It added that limited parts of Outlook users' emails may, as a effect, have been compromised too.

Meanwhile, Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters champion, (73, six under), Marc Leishman (75, one over) and Cameron Smith (77, two over) rounded out the Australian contingent.

Microsoft clarified that this "affected a limited subset of consumer accounts" and that the malicious activity began at the start of January 2019 and ran through to nearly the end of March, so essentially lasted three months. Microsoft found out that the hack was done by accessing a customer support account.

The firm warned in its e-mail that users might receive more spam and phishing e-mails as a result of the incident, and urged users not to click on links from e-mail addresses they did not recognise.

The breach itself is concerning, but what is also worrying is that Microsoft did not fess up to the full extent of the breach in one of the emails.

The company added that although password information had not been affected, it encouraged users to change their log-in details "out of caution".
