  • Ablaze: Notre Dame Catherdal in Paris engulfed in fire

Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most visited landmarks in the world, and the most visited in Paris.

A French firefighter has been "seriously injured" while battling the Notre Dame blaze, according to officials.

French media quoted the Paris fire brigade saying the blaze is "potentially linked" to the renovation work.

French Civil Security says the weight of water from an airdrop could have collapsed the site; reaction from Stacy Meichtry, Paris bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal.

Flames that began in the early evening burst through the roof of the centuries-old cathedral and engulfed the spire, which quickly collapsed followed by the entire roof. Images of the blaze showed plumes of smoke rising from flames at the top of the building.

The fire comes at the beginning of Holy Week, the week celebrating the days between Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and His Crucifixion on Good Friday and His Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters near the scene that he will seek worldwide help, including the "greatest talents" in the world, to rebuild Notre Dame.

Paris deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said emergency services are trying to salvage the famed art pieces stored in the cathedral. "Like all our compatriots, I'm sad tonight to see this part of ourselves burn".

A major fire has broken out at the historic French Notre Dame Cathedral immortalized in literature and film.

The cathedral was immortalized in Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", published in 1831, and has always been a subject of fascination in popular culture as well as the traditional art world. He said that's because the cathedral is bricks, stone and mortar that is lovely and significant, but of most importance is the "suffering, death, and resurrection of the Lord". President Emmanuel Macron said the whole nation was distressed. A thought for all Catholics and for all French.

"It will never be the same" said 30-year-old Samantha Silva, tears welling in her eyes as she explained how she would always take foreign friends visiting Paris to the cathedral.

"Last January, I looked out over the Parisian skyline, all the more beautified by the cathedral's spire", he added.

Later, while in Minnesota for a speech on the economy, Trump called the fire "one of the true catastrophes" and said "the television images he'd watched during his flight were "a bad sight to behold".
