  • Demonstrators during a Extinction Rebellion protest in Parliament Square in London

Extinction Rebellion campaigners were ordered by the Met to confine their protest to Marble Arch after causing widespread disruption on Monday.

Protesters also gathered at Marble Arch, situated at the end of Oxford Street, at Piccadilly Circus, and Parliament Square.

Campaign group Extinction Rebellion posted pictures of activists walking on the road on Twitter and said: "We have taken Waterloo bridge!"

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: "Ordinary citizens, terrified by the threat we all face to our future, will risk arrest and imprisonment by blocking bridges, roads, harbours and transport systems. We wish to make peace with ourselves by making peace with our neighbour Earth and with our God".

Spokesman James Fox said the group had attempted to maintain a blockade overnight at four sites in central London before the police came to impose the new restriction.

At Waterloo Bridge, protesters blocked the crossing over the Thames and turned it into an impromptu garden bridge, with people bringing trees, flowers and setting up a miniature skate park and stage. "Our objective is to create a political crisis, if that means people being arrested and going to jail then so be it".

Blythe Pepino, 34, from Hereford, said: "The objective is to maintain the disruption on the bridge to bring the Government to the table and talk about the climate crisis".

"Intentional arrests for criminal damage allow Extinction Rebellion to take this core strategy into the courts", the group said in a statement.

Reuben James, a 21-year-old Engineering student at Cardiff University, said he usually "wouldn't be against" getting arrested, but he had an exam in two weeks.

Extinction Rebellion are demanding the government declare an immediate climate emergency and commit to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

The remaining 117 were on Waterloo Bridge on Monday night and in the early hours of Tuesday, with the majority made for Public Order Act offences and obstructing a highway.

They added: "We will always provide a proportionate policing plan to balance the right to a peaceful protest, while ensuring that disruption to communities is kept to a minimum".
